Trailers and towing

Ownership of a 4x4 is often tied in closely with the need to tow a trailer. Many an old landrover is kept just for towing the horse box to the local gymkhanas, whereas more and more peolpe have a lifestyle that includes caravans, boats, car racing or flying. In business a trailer is often the answer to having just one vehicle rather than a car and a van. In Dec 2004 I was asked to tow an aircraft trailer insured for £50,000 and this got me tninking about how little most of us know about trailer towing. So how can 4x4web help?

Common Sense

• Are you OK to tow? Do you have the correct licence?
• Is your vehicle OK to tow? Weights, security of tow bar.
• Is the combination legal? Weights, lights, number plates.
• Tyres and pressures, how long since the trailer last moved? If a long time particularly check for damage to sidewalls of trailer tyres.

Training

If you passed your car driving test after January 1997, you now need to pass a separate test (licence category B + E) for towing a trailer or caravan weighing over 750kg M.A.M. (Maximum Authorised Mass). Most horse boxes, cattle trailers and caravans already weigh this much unladen.

You find out how heavy a load you can tow, how much overhang is allowed, what speed you can drive at and what lights you need. Once you are properly hitched up, you learn the skills needed to drive both on and off-road: stopping, reversing, loading and unloading. All of this instruction is carried out to D.O.T. licence standard.
